Interior Painting

Painting must be done properly to ensure maximum beauty and durability. Older homes inevitably have several layers of paint build up and require thorough surface preparation. Many painters merely sand cracks flat and then paint them - or fill them with spackle. To prevent reoccurence, cracks need to be taped and then coated with three passes of spackle. Drips and loose paint should be scraped, holes and gouges must be filled, and surfaces should be sanded and primed as necessary before new paint is applied. New paint can only look as good as the surface beneath will allow.

Color Consultation

Lisa Hayle thrives on color consulting and interior decorating. She enjoys building a rapport with clients and exploring the language, experience, and psychology of color. Color creates the context needed to enhance a space as well as its furnishings. The architecture of a home not only informs as to color, but is also highlighted by it. Rather than dictate colors based on interior design trends or personal preferences, Lisa works with the variables involved, finding colors that will reflect a client’s personality.

Wood Refinishing

Wood is a beautiful and precious natural resource. New construction of homes cannot begin to simulate the stunning interiors of older homes. Likewise, newly manufactured wooden furniture of quality even approaching antiques is very expensive. Older pieces lose luster to sun and wear. So it is often a wise decision to restore the finish on the furnishings and woodwork in your home. Also, the exterior wood of front doors and trim require preventative maintenance on the finish to protect it from time and the elements. We demonstrate reverence for wood and enjoy restoring the beauty and function of furniture. As for our painting, we never use spray finishes of any kind. Spraying puts less polyurethane or paint on the surface, and more in the air than hand application does. We employ the appropriate method of hand finishing for a particular piece or area.

Custom Furniture Design

Colin Hayle creates furniture that reflects the open-mindedness, creativity and boldness of the bay area demographic. The combination of his design experience, the function of the piece, and clients’ ideas results in one-of-a-kind pieces beautiful not only in form, but in specific utility. This collaborative approach results in furniture which adds richly to the home.

HEALTH, SAFETY, AND THE ENVIRONMENT - Most homes built before 1978 have lead-based paint. The federal government banned lead-based paint from housing in 1978. We employ a strict do-not-disturb policy that complies with laws and regulations. Also, whenever possible, we use materials that are not solvent based, but are water based and have lower VOC (volatile organic compound) levels. We pay as much attention to conservation and recycling as possible.

WHY LATEX - Oil paint does have a beautiful way of laying flat on surfaces - with almost imperceptible brushstrokes. However, since the woodwork and trim in most Bay Area homes already have multiple layers of old paint - it is not a benefit to use oil paint, as it highlights the surface beneath it! Also, it yellows with age and chips fairly easily. Solvent-based paints are more hazardous to health and the environment than water-based paints. We have found high quality latex paint to be extremely durable if properly applied. Before putting one stroke of latex paint over oil paint, we thoroughly dull the surface by hand sanding it, applying a chemical de-glosser, and then priming it. This labor-intensive process ensures the best bond for the new paint and prevents chipping and peeling in the face of ordinary wear and tear.

WHY BENJAMIN MOORE - Benjamin Moore paint is of excellent quality. Because we use one brand of paint, we are very familiar with its performance and durability. The primary reason we choose Benjamin Moore is for their outstanding color selection. Not only do they provide an abundance of shades to choose from, but also the colors themselves are rich and beautfiul.
